SPANISH
INTENT
At Fenstanton School, we are determined to develop children’s experience of language acquisition and encourage curiosity about languages. In Key Stage 2, we aim to develop their understanding of what they hear and read, as well as having an ability to express themselves in speech and writing within another language.
The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:

Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
A high quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We follow the National Curriculum using a programme (La Jolie Ronde scheme of work) which is designed to extend the children’s knowledge of how language works and explore differences between Spanish and English, as well as ensuring progression of all skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), knowledge and vocabulary.
At Fenstanton, we are committed to ensuring that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures. It also helps children develop skills that will open further opportunities later in life. The teaching of Spanish in KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays important foundations for their transition to secondary school.
IMPLEMENTATION
Spanish lessons use a variety of sources, primarily the La Jolie Ronde scheme. At the beginning of the year, prior learning is assessed and developed as necessary before the scheme of work is followed. Lessons begin with rapid recall of prior vocabulary to ensure this is embedded.
In KS2, each class has a timetabled Spanish lesson of 30 minutes. Lessons across KS2 focus on the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The lessons are designed to motivate children from the first moment and are initially mainly practical in focus.
Learning walls include the vocabulary being taught along with any area that the teacher deems necessary to revise. Vocabulary use and sentence structure knowledge is formatively assessed during the lessons and is used to inform future planning. Assessments are completed at the end of each term that focuses on the vocabulary and skills taught in that term.
